 In chapter one of 1984, we get a solid glimpse of the world it will be taken place in. From this, we are able to see how much society has been molded to be something specific and predictable, so that nothing surprising can go wrong and cause problems, so the points where even the identification of sex is something that is losing its meaning. Although this something quite extreme and I currently don't actually believe something like this to happen with the current course we are going to, I do think hypothetically with an open mindset this could happen through (hear me out) social media. 

If say I guess the world government suddenly decided that they wanted to create a totalitarian kind of world like 1984, but didn't want to start some kind of civil war with the likely upbringing of a resistance front. They would need a way to do it quietly without the mass population even knowing about it. Their goal would be something like 1984 being able to mold each person into where they are meant to keep society running and such. But how would they do this with social media, the answer to that is quite simple, through hypnosis. But controlling the feed of people's social media, they would be able to exactly want they want each person to see. I theorize that by romanticizing specific roles for each person by constantly showing posts of happy they would be fitting this role, then posting ads and such for it as well, making it appear easily obtainable, it might work. Maybe pot in some videos that have actual hypnotic mind control and then it'll really work.
